Sam Harris on the Colbert Report, Tuesday April 25

This was a pretty good interview. When Harris managed to speak he made good points. I particularly appreciated his reference to the Vatican's "genocidal stupidity".

Of course Colbert's ignorant, loud-mouthed tirade stood in sharp contrast to Harris' insights, but, as I'm sure much of middle America is unaware of, Colbert's stance is satirical and designed to make that position appear stupid. Not that it needs any help.

We're reading and discussing "The End of Faith" during 2nd quarter of 2006 on BookTalk.org. Stop by and get involved if you're interested. We might invite Sam Harris for a live chat, depending on how the remainder of this discussion period unfolds.

Thanks for the heads up and the invite. I definately will look into it. The End of Faith was a good book, and Sam Harris makes a lot of sense.

Thanks again.

I fully understand that not all Midwesterners are ignorant. Notice how, in the post in question, I said "much of middle America". In any region there will be people in the minority (even a significant minority), that should go without saying.

In fact, my sympathies go out to those relatively few reasonable citizens in Red America (udonman included, I'm sure). I can only hope that their descendants continue their good habits, though I am not optimistic.

I am not ashamed or regretful of perpetuating this stereotype. Red America is an obstinate anchor that is burdening and drowning the rest of the country. I am a proud secessionist and, as far as I'm concerned, it's in our best interest if the nation remains polarized.

Udonman, you should definately pick up "the End of Faith". It is a good read, though the last chapter, on meditation, is a bit technical. Also, don't take offense to my generalities. I may type in absolutes, since doing otherwise would take forever, but I definately know that their are very few legitamate absolutes.

Case in point "Atheist Revolution" is great blog, written by a gentleman from Mississippi. Here's the URL: http://atheistrevolution.blogspot.com/
